Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood.
Mental illness refers to a wide range of mental health conditions or disorders that affect a person’s mood, thinking and behavior.
Many research suggest that mental health concerns are caused by a combination of biological, psychological, and environmental factors.
Most mental illnesses are caused by a combination of factors. However, some preventive measures can decrease the likelihood of developing mental illnesses. This include preventing neglect and abuse in childhood , preventing substance abuse, increased social support, decrease burden of other health disorders, healthy lifestyle, training in management of stress etc.
Yes, mental illness is treatable. In many cases, the symptoms of a mental illness improve with psychotherapy, medication or a combination of both. Alternative treatments, such as support groups and self-help materials, can also be used in conjunction with therapy and medication. Treatment impacts people differently and should always be individualized and discussed with a mental health practitioner.
If you are committed to making personal changes for greater life satisfaction, then you are ready to seek therapy. Many people believe that they need to be suffering from “mental illness” or serious “psychological problems” in order for them to meet a mental health care provider or therapy to be appropriate. This is not the case, anyone can benefit from therapy. Some even choose to come in for insight only.
Many people incorrectly associate psychotherapy with the typical media depiction of a “Freudian” style session in which the therapist is sitting silently in the chair and nodding throughout the whole session. We will take on a much more interactive and collaborative approach in our sessions. You can expect me to explore your thoughts, feelings, behaviors, the past and the present, during the session.
